here is my retransmission

Taormina is a beautiful town along the southeastern coast of Sicily
[at the toe of the boot of Italy]. It is located high above the coast
with a great view of the surroundings [incl Mt Etna]. Much like Malta
this area has been attacked/ rules by many people throughout the ages [Greece, Rome, Saracens, Normans, France (Pope Innocent IV, a
Frenchman, decided the island was his to give), Spain (I realize that
I have mixed countries and peoples, pls forgive me Dr. Rampy!)]. Today
it is a tourist magnet. Lots of shopping [I will try to hold back my excitement!], restaurants, cafes, bars and gelato shops. Let's just
say that we did our part to stimulate the economy of this country.

The cultural attraction is the Greco- Roman theater at the top of the
hill. It was built by the Greeks in the 3rd century BC, then
redesigned to fit Roman tastes when they took over. It is very well
preserved and I think it is still in limited use today. The other nice
thing is that the position affords a great view of the coast line and
Mt Etna.

We've been having a great time. Except for about 45 minutes we have
had no rain and the temps have been very comfortable.

This evening we will go through the straits of Messina and later
tonight we will pass by Mt Stromboli another active volcano.

Take care ... Denis

It has just come to my attention that all the e-mails that I have been sending have been going to some dark hole in the internet!

I am going to try to resend at least the last few. I have been using a
new computer and apparently it is not my friend!

re-cap, we've had a great trip and the weather has been beautiful
until this afternoon [our last day on the ship. Great ports of call.
... sorry abuot the problems with getting the e-mails out. ... Denis

We are spending the last two days of our cruise in beautiful Sorrento
on the Amalfi coast. As you walk into Amalfi, there is a sign that
says "An Amalfian dies and goes to heaven, the next day he wakes up
and everything is the same! ". That could be an exaggeration, but not
by much. We have spent time in this area before, so we are just taking
it easy. The shipping arrived Thursday morning and we stayed in port
over night. Tomorrow we have a long drive north to the lake district
(north of Milan, near the Swiss border), so we thought it wise to rest
up a little.

Several of the people are going to Pompeii for the day, this is also
close to (the isle of) Capri and the beautiful towns of Positano and
Ravello.

AsI mentioned, we have had amazing weather .... It looks like qthe
timing was pretty good, this afternoon, they are expecting rain ( just
about the time we leave port). The night we left Taormina we were
treated to a great view of Stromboli, an active volcano. the Captain
stopped for about 15 minutes and we had a great light show.

Caio for now ..... Denis

PS - the spell check on the IPad keeps trying the help me. It
corrected " caio" to "fail". So if I had not looked back, it would
have read "Fail for now". Not exactly the msg I intended to send.
Technology is great, but must be monitored closely.

Malta is about 60 miles south of Sicily [the bottom of Italy]. The
approach to Malta is very unique, the whole island has a low sand
stone appearance, like nothing you have seen before.

Malta has been attacked by and occupied by many of its neighbors in
the Med. For this reason, it has influences from many area. The
(Maltese) language is semitic based, but uses Latin characters. Malta
is one of the most densely populated countries in the world. Politics
is apparently a national sport. In the last election (2008), they had
the lowest voter turn out since their independence; only 92% of
eligible voters went to the polls!

Malta is truly a cross roads for the Med. The Knights of Malta were in charge for many years, so there is an odd combination of church and
military influence in the cities and the culture. The knights served
the medical needs of the crusaders.

When we were here before we spent our time in and around Valletta, the capitol of Malta. Today we went to the other side of the island and
visited Mdina ["em DEE nuh", and there is not an "e" missing]. This
was one of the original fortresses to guard the island. We visited the Cathedral which was very impressive.

Patrick: note the following.

We also visited the Carmelite church and priori, a beautiful old
monastery that now acts as a museum and educational center.

For those wondering about the Maltese Falcons. We saw them everywhere!
... Every jewelry and souvenir shop in town had them on display and
for sale! There are no falcons native to Malta. When the knights asked
to occupy Malta, the Holy Roman Emperor agreed to let them use the
land for the nominal payment of one falcon per year!

We a great time on Malta, but by the time we got back to the ship, we
had some lunch sat by the pool and crashed!

The ship is very nice and tonight they are having a BBQ by the pool.
We have had great weather [mid - upper 70s] and it looks like the rest
of the week should be similar.

Thanks for all your nice notes ...

Denis
